T&T businesswoman first dengue death for year

(Trinidad Guardian) A San Juan businesswoman has become the country’s first reported dengue fatality this year. Tricia Seuraj, of Bissessar Street, El Socorro, died on Monday morning at the St Clair Medical Facility of what is believed to be dengue haemorrhagic fever. Seuraj, who was a section leader in Hart’s Carnival band, was admitted into hospital on Saturday complaining of flu-like symptoms. A close relative said her condition worsened.

She died at 10.30 am of organ failure and internal bleeding at the Intensive Care Unit.

When contacted on Monday, a representative of Hart’s  band described Seuraj as a close friend and part of the band’s extended family. He added: “She played mas with us since 1999.

Tricia will be greatly missed and we send condolences to her family.” There were over 600 reported cases of dengue fever from January to August last year with three deaths attributed to the fever.

Efforts to contact the Chief Medical Officer for comment proved futile.
