A large business complex is currently on fire in Lethem.
Regional Chairman Clarindo Lucas told Stabroek News that the fire started some time around 6:30 pm. According to him, the complex named ‘Wayka’ housed a supermarket, general store, restaurant and internet café. The blaze is believed to have started in the internet café.
At present, members of the community are trying to contain the blaze via a bucket brigade. Guyana Police Force (GPF) and Guyana Defence Force are on the scene securing the premises.
Lucas said the village does not have a fire tender and it appears unlikely that the building will be saved. “It is my hope that they can save some items,” Lucas said.
The complex is owned by a Guyanese woman with Brazilian connections and was constructed about six years ago, this newspaper was told.
