Robbery victim made to pay court costs after dropping case

A robbery victim was yesterday made to pay $10,000 court costs after he decided not to proceed with the case against his alleged attacker.

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry heard at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court that on February 16, along Smyth Street, Michael Alphonso was allegedly robbed by Anthony Charles of one Nokia cellular phone, valued at $25,000 as well as $1,040 in cash.

Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, told the court that Charles, along with three others, allegedly approached Alphonso and searched him. Charles then dealt Alphonso a cuff, taking the phone and money. The accused was arrested and the phone was subsequently found on him.

The prosecution objected to bail, on grounds that Charles had a similar matter before the court and also so that he would not interfere with Alphonso. However, Alphonso decided to no longer proceed with the matter and the case was dismissed. Alphonso was then ordered to pay $10,000 for the court’s time.
