Suspicious bottle, pipe found near NCN transmitters

A bottle with what is suspected to be a flammable liquid and a piece of rusty steel pipe was yesterday morning found outside the transmission room at National Communications Network (NCN), Homestretch Avenue.

Initial reports were that a suspected explosive device was found but when contacted a senior police official said they have received no such information.

Police later said in a press release that around 0720 hours security personnel on duty at the NCN compound found a “plastic container with suspected gasoline inside and a piece of rusty steel pipe with a plastic cord on each end attached through the handle”, outside the transmission room.

NCN said in a statement that ranks were called after “what appeared to be an explosive device was discovered” before confirming that the discovery was made by security personnel who alerted management staff.

The statement added that investigating ranks arrived soon after and examined the device which was found at the back of the complex in the southern most part of the compound. Ranks also scoured the area, the release said before adding that “It is still to be ascertained by the bomb experts if what was discovered was indeed an explosive device as investigations continue”.

The police official told this newspaper that there was nothing inside the small piece of pipe which was found near the bottle with the flammable substance.

The official said the bottle with the substance along with the pipe was later taken to the police lab for testing.

Police are continuing investigations.
