Man assaulted ex at birthday celebration

A man charged with assaulting his ex-lover at her birthday celebration, was yesterday placed on $10,000 bail, but taken into custody after he said he did not have the money.

Phillip Wayne, 39, who appeared to have a hangover when he appeared before Magistrate Adela Naga-mootoo yesterday at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court, denied assaulting his ex after receiving some food she had prepared to celebrate her 50th birthday.

According to reports, Wayne had shared a relationship with Anita Seetaram for eight years.

However, the woman ended the affair, owing to the constant abuse she suffered at Wayne’s hands.
On February 6, reports said, as Seetaram celebrated her 50th birthday, the accused who lives a few houses away, entered her yard saying he was hungry.

He was served a meal and a beverage by one of the virtual complainant’s relatives, but it is alleged that he pushed open the woman’s front door and dealt her several slaps while using a series of expletives.

In court yesterday, under the mistaken belief that he had been fined, the defendant asked for time as he was out of cash.

However, he was ordered out of the courtroom, into the custody of the police who escorted him to prison pending his hearing on April 26.
