$12M contract awarded to fence community centres

The Ministry of Housing and Water signed a $12M contract on Monday for the construction of fences at three of four multipurpose centres recently commissioned countrywide.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release, Minister Irfaan Ali made this announcement at a commissioning ceremony hosted at the centre in Belle West, Canal No. 2 Polder, West Bank Demerara. He said the tender for the construction for that fence and two others were being offered and a contract is to be awarded soon. The playfield will also be upgraded with assistance from the community.

Ali told the community that the purpose of the centre is to enhance community spirit and social cohesion. He also pointed out that in all of the communities in which the centres were established, “there exists a microcosm of the racial and ethnic mix that exists in the wider society.”

GINA said fences will also be built at centres at Westminster, West Bank Demerara and Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara.
