Live wire kills animals at Enterprise pasture

A live wire, which reportedly fell on Sunday last aback of Section ‘C’ Enterprise, killed several animals and now the stench of the rotting carcasses is making life difficult for residents.

The wire, which belongs to the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) company, fell in an open pasture and electrocuted three cows, a horse and a dog. Residents said they were not sure exactly what time on Sunday the line fell or to whom the animals belonged.

When this newspaper visited the scene yesterday, the bloated bodies of the animals were still lying in the pasture and the wire was still down.

When asked whether reports were made to GPL concerning the matter, persons living around the area said they had no idea but that some GPL officials visited the area yesterday morning.

The residents said they were not sure whether the wire still had current running through it and some said they feared for the lives of their children who usually play in the pasture.

Contacted yesterday, GPL’s Public Relations Officer Shevonne Sears-Murray said that according to reports from the company’s engineers, someone in the area was stealing electricity and the wire fell, killing some animals. Sears-Murray said GPL was not sure how many animals were killed. However, she said, the company has since fixed the problem.

Meanwhile, Doreen (only name given) of Karabiru Street said that the animals were probably stray animals, since they “does deh in here day and night.”

She said she was most affected by the stench in the mornings when the place is cool and she is in her kitchen cooking. Doreen said that she heard persons talking about tyres having to be used to burn the carcasses, but so far no one has stepped up to do such.

Another resident said the wire was wrapped around the animals.
