Quartet accused of abduction for trial on March 24

The quartet accused of abduction of taxi-driver Gregory Lile was yesterday told by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that the trial will commence on March 24 after the prosecution indicated to the court that it was ready to proceed.

Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that the prosecution has three witnesses to call and statements are ready. He then asked for a date to begin the trial. Taquin Springer, Colin Manson, Shelton Bourne and Jason Rambarran denied the charge levelled against them after the Administration of Justice Act (AJA) was applied at yesterday’s hearing.

Springer, 29, of 161 South Turkeyen, is a mechanic, while Manson, 23, of 377 Turkeyen, is an electrician. Bourne, 26, of 22 Sandy Babb Street, Kitty and Rambarran, of 7 Bel Air Village, are both miners.

When the jointly charged men first appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, they were remanded to prison by the Magistrate. Their attorney George Thomas had, however, moved to the High Court and was successful in securing bail in the sum of $100,000 for each of them.

The prosecution’s facts are that Lile was given instructions to post a package to the interior on January 25, which he did.

Later, on January 26, the accused then approached Lile to find out what he had done with the package. After relating to the men that he had done as instructed, Harvey said that the quartet then forced the complainant into their car and drove away, after which they threatened to kill him.
