The Elections Commissioner should not be a theatre critic

Dear Editor,

In reference to the exchange of letters between Dr Steve Surujbally (SN, Feb 24) and Mr Ron Robinson (Sunday Stabroek, Feb 27), on the issue of the Link Show, I would just like to say that I agree completely with Mr Robinson’s point of view, and I cannot understand the position of the Elections Commissioner criticizing that show in any way. The freedom to make fun of anyone and for how long during any Link Show is totally the prerogative of the producers of that show – I am sure that Minister Rohee takes such lark in stride. Dr Surujbally has been involved in this kind of entertainment critic role before, with his politically-based criticisms of Avatar, the movie put out by James Cameron which was really an excellent production and a joy to view. Dr Surujbally needs to concentrate on the elections this year and put everything in order; he should be recruiting notable personages in our society for TV and radio commercials as well as in the press encouraging people to get registered, pick up their current registration cards (40,000-60,000 cards still not distributed to potential voters) and urging people to vote on election day. Dr Surujbally is paid a handsome sum to be Elections Commissioner, and he should be urging the political parties to have the local elections the same day as the general elections – it can be done, especially since we have had no local elections in 15 years.

Editor, the first local personage Dr Surajbally should use in commercials to strengthen the arms of democracy and get out the urgency of registering to vote and actually voting on election day, is Mr Ron Robinson, who is a well-known Guyanese citizen with recognition throughout our society.

Yours faithfully,
Cheddi (Joey) Jagan (Jr)
