I feel compelled to make a brief response to only two aspects contained in a letter published in the Chronicle yesterday, and written by a personal and family friend, Mr Harry Gill.
The first is an unpardonable piece of disinformation about the presidential candidate Brigadier (rtd) David Granger. He makes an unhappy connection between Brigadier Granger and the purported seizure of ballot boxes by the Guyana Defence Force in 1973. This is no more than a continuing mischief; to link Granger to such an allegation is the figment of someone’s imagination. I speak as the General Secretary of the People’s National Congress in 1973. Let him ask me about the genesis of these allegations. Why the attempt to stain Granger at this time is another matter.
The second error is the statement that, “David Granger was selected by Robert Corbin.” This is groundless and the height of unhappy speculation. Where on earth is the evidence? Because I wish to ensure the viability of the party, I took a keen interest in the entire process leading to the identification of a presidential candidate. I was nominated a presidential candidate, but for reasons I have already stated, withdrew. Nevertheless, I witnessed the keen interest by party members and supporters at the several ‘town hall’ meetings. Indeed this exercise has enhanced the image of PNC, even among its detractors. To even suggest that Mr Corbin selected (a strong word) David Granger is therefore far from reality.
