The wounded Inniss was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Stabroek News has since learnt that the stabber is in police custody after turning himself into ranks at a mobile unit at Stabroek Market Square.

The suspect also handed over the murder weapon to the police, this newspaper was told. A post-mortem examination will be conducted tomorrow.

Inniss’s relatives were in distress when this newspaper spoke with them.

The dead man’s stepfather, Wilfred Bourne said that around 7 am, his wife, Carla Douglas called him from Berbice to say that “somebody stab her son and kill him and that her mother was already at the hospital”.

Bourne said the news shocked him and he immediately proceeded to the hospital but was told that he could not identify the body since the morgue would not open until 10 am.

The man said he later went to the Brickdam Police Station and returned to the hospital morgue with two ranks.

He said he was then able to identify the body.

According to Bourne, Inniss was stabbed in the heart and also sustained a cut underneath his chin.

Bourne told Stabroek News that he was told by an eyewitness that a man, who was apparently known to Inniss, was seen speaking to him and then the man ran away. It was after this that another man walked up to Inniss and stabbed him in the chest.

The witness, Bourne stated, said Inniss fell to the ground and the man walked off.

Confronted with allegations that Inniss had robbed someone, relatives did not confirm or deny this. According to an aunt, “we ain’t swearing for nobody. You mek yuh children but you don’t mek they mind”.

Relatives said the information they received was that the man who stabbed Inniss was indeed robbed of his wallet which contained a large amount of cash including US currency along with his cell phone.

According to a relative, the robbery was committed by the man who ran away after talking to Inniss.

It was explained to this newspaper that Inniss’s routine was to go to the market as early as 04:00 hrs every day to buy fruits particularly green mangoes and pineapples, which he would then cut up and sell.

Relatives said Inniss, who at one time was in the army, sold his fruits in front of Footsteps or the City Mall on Saturdays. He walked around the city on the other days to ply his trade.

Bourne described his stepson as a good person who did not get into arguments. “If you talk to he lil hard, he wouldn’t answer,” Bourne said.

Inniss also leaves to mourn, his five-year-old daughter and other relatives.

Police are continuing investigations.
