The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) yesterday held a workshop for umpires and scorers of the game.
The workshop, conducted by national player Andrew Daly and coach Linden Johnson along with assistance fro0m general secretary and current national men’s singles champion Godfrey Munroe, was held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
According to a release from the GTTA, the staging of the workshop was “part of the institutional strengthening of the association.”
The workshop, the release noted, came at the urging of GTTA president Henry Greene who noted the need to improve the standard of officiating.
According to the release the course covered the key areas such as the role of the umpire in administering of the rules; the rules of the game; penalties available including the issuance of yellow and red cards and ensuring there is no infringement of the rules in the areas of misbehavior and coaches giving advice.
“In addition to covering the theoretical aspects of the game the participants were given role play situations where they were given actual match situation/conditions and required to proficiently simulate/demonstrate the areas and examples covered,” the release stated.
“The goal of the GTTA is to create a nucleus of umpires with the requisite accreditation and knowledge available to the GTTA for domestic and international competitions since in the international realm many times the governing bodies would request umpires from different regions to officiate in matches,” stated the release.
In May of 2011 the GTTA will be hosting an ITTF sponsored Umpires and tournament referee accreditation working shop, the release noted.
