New service offers yellow pages, flight schedules on mobile phones

Many Guyanese will now be able to access the yellow pages of the telephone  directory on their cellular phones, following the launch yesterday of Perception Public Relations’ innovative mobile directory.

The service, called OI.GY, is a first for Guyana and the Caribbean, and according to the developers, it represents Guyanese innovation. Speaking at the launch, head of Perception Public Relations Ajay Baksh said, “the OI service at www.oi.gy puts the power of the phonebook in your cell phone free of charge, regardless of which network you are on. It will be available 24/7 to anyone who has an internet enabled phone.”

According to Baksh, “It is the power of search in your hands, on the go and anytime you need it. Oi.gy links customers with businesses in an interactive directory with click-to-call convenience.”

The service seeks to let users get more out of their phone and to help businesses maximise scarce advertising dollars. According to a press release, the service is so formulated that it is adaptable to whichever area of Guyana the user is located.

“For example, if you are visiting Berbice or Essequibo and need a restaurant, hotel, taxi, etc., you can simply type in the keyword and select the area you are in,” the release said. Baksh said results appear instantaneously and the service is very easy to use.

Apart from being free of charge to users, business owners who are desirous of enlisting their businesses are only required to pay an annual subscription rate of $22 per day.
Persons who have full or part-time businesses or services as well as individuals with their own personal businesses can be listed on the site.

The release said that in addition to being listed on the cell phone site, businesses will also be listed on the web-based version of the site, which will feature a company profile and additional contact options. Another additional feature that the OI.GY service has is real time flight updates, where one can access the Cheddi Jagan International Airport flight schedule. The site has been on trial for three months and is currently available to all Guyanese.
