CCC snatch points despite Hinds, Walton efforts

SPANISH TOWN, Jamaica, CMC – Half-centuries from Wavell Hinds and Chadwick Walton were not enough as Combined Campuses and Colleges grabbed first innings points over Jamaica on the final day of their fifth round match in the Regional First Class Championship here yesterday.

Hinds, a former West Indies left-hander, scored 74 while Walton, who has also played two Tests, got 51 but Jamaica were dismissed for 341, just short of CCC’s first innings of 353 at Chedwin Park.CCC were inspired by seamer Kevin McClean who finished with an impressive haul five for 79 and off-spinner Ryan Austin who claimed three for 53.

Resuming the day at 133 for three, Jamaica lost Test batsman Brendan Nash after he added just five to his overnight 14, and when captain Tamar Lambert fell for 20 soon after, the hosts were sliding at 148 for five.

Hinds then anchored two crucial partnerships to haul Jamaica back into contention. He shared 86 for the sixth wicket with David Bernard Jr (36) and then another 87 for the seventh wicket with Walton.

Hinds hit four fours and three sixes in an innings that needed 174 balls and lasted 279 minutes, before being eighth out to a catch at slip off Austin.

Bernard, meanwhile, hit 36 off 82 balls with five fours but perished to the first of Floyd Reifer’s two catches at slip off Austin.

Walton played positively for nearly two hours, facing 91 balls and hitting four fours and two sixes before losing his wicket just after tea.
