Boats in city’s outfall channel hamper drainage

A few fishing boats in the channel of the city’s outfall at Riverview, Ruimveldt and Cowan Street are affecting the “free and swift flow of water” through these waterways, according to the Mayor & City Council (M&CC).

The M&CC said on Tuesday that the vessels should be removed. In a release, it noted that some time ago it had written to the relevant authorities on the issue, pointing out that these vessels were restricting the flow of water in the canals and through the channels but to date that situation has not been resolved. The municipality said that it was again appealing to the authorities to have the vessels removed as this would assist in the council’s efforts to provide for effective drainage of the city.

The M&CC also noted that over the previous 96 hours, the city had experienced about four inches of rain. With the drainage facility in Georgetown catering for 1 ½ inches of rain over a 24-hour period, many local communities experienced overtopping. However the council assured that all of its drainage equipment is operable, including all pumps and sluices.
