GT&T pole falls on business place, car in NA

A New Amsterdam resident is counting his losses after a Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Co. (GT&T) pole fell, damaging portions of the building which houses Sterling Products Limited in New Amsterdam, Berbice.

Ferose Fazal, who resides on the upper flat of the two-storey building at the corner of Trinity Street and Republic Road, said he was awakened   by a crashing sound at about 03:00hrs yesterday morning.

The fallen GT&T pole.

Fazal said that although there were no heavy winds, it was raining lightly when the insect infested wooden pole fell, damaging his grilled fence, a parked TT 131 Toyota Carina motorcar, and louvre windows on the lower flat of the building, which houses the business.

On venturing outside moments later, Fazal said he observed that the front wall on the lower flat had become unaligned due to the impact. As a result, one of the doors remained open.

The businessman was unable to assess the cost of the damage and he said that he would have to consult his mechanic and welder before placing a figure to the losses. However, he added that officials of GT&T visited the scene and assessed the damage. He said an official promised that an investigation will be launched.

Meanwhile, when this newspaper arrived on the scene officials from Guyana Power and Light Company were already there but they were quick to point out that the pole was not bearing their power lines.
