Bicycle thief sentenced to six months

Shawn Gobin, who on March 2 admitted to stealing another man’s bicycle, was last week sentenced to a six month jail term by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

The sentence was handed down to the labourer, of Canje, Berbice, last Monday, after a probation report was presented to the court.

Gobin had admitted that on March 1, at Georgetown, he stole a bicycle valued $14,000, which was the property of Carlon Barker. He had been placed on bail, pending the presentation of the probation report.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Lionel Harvey said that on the day in question, the complainant had parked his cycle outside of a shop and entered to purchase an item when the accused rode away with it.

According to him, Barker saw Gobin and raised an alarm, which led to his subsequent arrest and charge.
