President meets sand pit miners on boosting output

The strong demand in the housing sector prompted a meeting between sand pit miners and President Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday at the Office of the President on how to boost sand output.

A release from the Government Information Agency said that the miners were accompanied by Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, Commissioner (ag) of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, Karen Livan and Major General (ret’d) Joe Singh.

GINA said the meeting sought to determine how sand mining can be stimulated to better meet the country’s needs.

The meeting also sought to ascertain whether the sand pit mining industry is meeting the aforementioned demand.

“The feeling is that the demand is not being met so how can we grow the industry very quickly in order to meet the demand?” Livan asked.
