St Lucia airport closed after crash

The Caribbean Media Corporation says that the George Charles Airport on the outskirts of Castries, St Lucia remained closed today after a small aircraft crashed while attempting to land.

The St Lucia Air and Sea Port Authority (SLASPA) said the pilot, Silvanus Ernest, who was the sole occupant of the twin engine Cessna A421 aircraft, escaped unhurt.

CMC said that the plane crashed into a nearby fence after its landing gear became stuck forcing the pilot to circle the runway for an extended period.

Officials were unable to say how soon the airport would re-open.  CMC said that the closure has resulted in the cancellation of several flights into and out of the island.
