Amerindian communities get $9.8M in aid from gov’t

A number of Amerindian communities on Thursday received donations to the value of $9.8M from the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs to help improve the lives of the residents, a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said.

Paruima received a 25HP boat engine to assist with transportation in the community, while Santa Mission, a popular tourist destination, got a 40HP boat engine which will enhance transportation not only for the community but also for visitors.

Meanwhile Arukamai received a 15HP boat engine to assist with transportation while Waramuri was given $5M, part of which was spent on a minibus for the community, GINA said.

The Muritaro community received a portable sawmill which Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai said will help the youths of the community become involved at the value added level of the forestry sector.

And Annai received a chainsaw to assist with its agricultural drive and also obtained $1.8M for the Bina Hill Institute to ensure the payment of personnel for the facility.

Kato which is heavily engaged in agriculture received a chainsaw which will be used to clear areas for additional agriculture ventures and the maintenance of roads and bridges, GINA added.
