Ex-cop freed over escapes from Providence station

Former Police Corporal Diana Chichester yesterday appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where charges of negligently permitting persons in custody to escape were dismissed against her.

The matter was first called on August 3, 2009 when Chichester was read the offence of negligently permitting persons in custody at the Providence Police Station to escape. The two escapees were Collin Jones and Kurt Thierens, who is now deceased. Chichester who served for 23 years in the Guyana Police Force was dismissed after the incident.

Attorney-at-law Patrice Henry represented the defendant in the matter.

Eight witnesses were called to the stand and a no-case submission was upheld.
