Why isn’t there more sensitization about colon cancer?

Dear Editor,

An article under the caption – Do you have risk factors for Colon Cancer? in the Sunday edition (17th April, 2011) of the Kaieteur News newspaper has forced me to ask the Minister of Health these few questions on behalf of all Guyanese.

Why is the general public not being sensitized as often about this dreadful disease the way we are about Diabetes, Hypertension, TB, AIDS etc. Since anyone 50 years and over is at risk?

With so many students being trained in the medical field both in Cuba and other institutions at home and abroad, how many are being trained in this field to deal with this type of disease?

Is there a department at the Georgetown Hospital where persons who are keen on keeping regular checks on their colon from time to time can go?

These questions are raised out of concern since after reading this article I am contemplating having myself checked as early as possible since I am over 50 years old.

Yours faithfully,
Esleen Cort
