Carnal knowledge remand escapee gets 18 months

A man was yesterday jailed for 18 months after police only recently apprehended him since he escaped  while on remand.

Kenneth Gilbert appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to  escaping from lawful custody at the Ruimveldt Police Station on September 1, 2007, after being remanded on a carnal knowledge charge.

When given a chance to speak, Gilbert told the court that “my brother died and my family couldn’t afford money to bail.” He further stated that he had been working on a farm located in Timehri since the incident.

The man was subsequently remanded by Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry.
