‘Channa bomb’ in airport washroom still a mystery

Almost a week after a freshly made “channa bomb” was found in a washroom at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, authorities are yet to determine how it ended up there and for what purpose.

Crime Chief Seelall Persaud told Stabroek News on Tuesday that an analysis of the explosive device will be conducted shortly. He said that no suspects have been held and authorities at the airport have not been able to “pick up anything much.”

The discovery was made by a Guyana Revenue Authority employee around 8.50 pm last Thursday. A source said what appeared to be gasoline was in a medium- sized R1 vodka bottle and channa could be seen at the bottom. There was no evidence of attempts to light the explosive device before the discovery, the source added, saying that from all appearances the perpetrator left it there with the intention of returning.

The device was found in an area near a security checkpoint that is accessible to both staff and passengers, which makes it difficult to pinpoint a suspect. Surveillance cameras in the general area, some of which focus on the washroom where the device was found, captured no suspicious movements.

The airport, in a brief statement, had said that the explosive device did not pose any safety or security risk to the facility or passengers and staff.

Following the incident, police had questioned several cleaners and other staff at the airport but no vital information was received.

Police are continuing their investigations.
