Man in police bulletin remanded over cocaine trafficking

An Albouystown man accused of trafficking in 138 grammes of cocaine was yesterday remanded after appearing before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation against Gary Anthony Rodrigues is that on May 7 at his 22 Hill Street, Albouystown, Georgetown home he had in his possession 138 grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. Police had issued a wanted bulletin for him last week.

The 42-year-old father of four denied the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking when it was read to him.

Attorney-at-law Vic Puran who represented the accused made an application for his client to be admitted to reasonable bail saying that he has no antecedents, poses no risk of flight and has a fixed address.

Counsel in his address said that he also wished to bring to the court’s attention that “the police have stolen in excess of $1.4M in raw gold from this client.”

Cautioning the lawyer that she was not conducting the trial at yesterday’s hearing, Magistrate Octive-Hamilton told Puran that he needed to “raise that allegation at the appropriate forum.” She further told him that all she had before her was a narcotics charge.

Police Corporal Venetta Pindar objected to the accused being granted bail, stating that the defence did not advance special circumstances relating to the particular offence.

Rodrigues was subsequently remanded to prison until May 19 for reports.
