Hero mother undergoes surgery after boat collision

Zoreen Edwards, who suffered major injuries to both her legs after being involved in a boat collision, underwent surgery on Tuesday last and is still bedridden at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Yonette (only name given), a close friend of Edwards, stated that the 34-year-old woman is doing much better but there is no word on when she is expected to be discharged from the hospital.

Edwards clung to her teenage son for more than 30 minutes before being rescued after the boat she was travelling in collided with a larger one on June 11. As a result, both the woman’s legs were broken. Also injured were the woman’s 14-year-old son and her sister, Verna Edwards, who both received treatment and were sent home.

Meanwhile, at Edwards’ home in Riverview, the woman’s five children have been left to fend on their own, with the eldest, a 17-year-old girl, taking charge of her younger siblings.

The captain of the larger vessel had since been released on station bail and a police source told Stabroek News that the man had not been charged.
