GDF lieutenant in US jail facing four sodomy, molestation charges

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) officer, who is now in a US jail, is facing three counts of sodomy which are all described as felony charges and one charge of child molestation described in court documents as a misdemeanour.

The Lieutenant, whose name is Marvin Douglas and not Martin Douglas as was erroneously stated by the GDF in a release on Monday, was on a course in the state of Missouri when he was slapped with the charges last Thursday.

The GDF in a release today said that the mix-up with the officer’s name was due to a typographical error.

The officer was placed on US$50,000 bail and according to court documents the prosecution opposed him posting 10% of the amount or him being released by posting property. The prosecution also opposed any reduction of the bail or him being released on his own recognizance.  Further, the prosecution asked that it be notified if there is any request in relation to any of the conditions they opposed so that they could be present and request a hearing.

The GDF in their release had said: “The Government of Guyana, through its Embassy in Washington, DC, has already dispatched staff to visit the Officer in order to assess his case with a view to providing legal assistance.”
The Lieutenant is in the St Louis County Jail and his next court appearance is scheduled for September 19 and not the 11th as the GDF release had originally indicated.
