The Pastor presiding over the Reaching the World Ministry Church remains in a critical state after he was on Tuesday night severely beaten by two armed men at his Lot 15 Helena No. 2 Mahaica, East Coast Demerara home.
Daniel Subramani, 36, and his wife Praneila, 35, were outside when two masked bandits entered their yard and launched an attack, escaping with a sum of cash and gold jewellery.
According to the man’s sister-in-law, the perpetrators first attacked Praneila, leaving her in an unconscious state before taking the man into the house and terrorizing him.
“They shook her up and asked where was the chicken money and she fell on the floor and after she fell, they kicked her so she got unconscious,” the woman explained, adding that her sister remained unconscious throughout the ordeal.
The woman further stated that it was thereafter that Daniel was taken into the bedroom and beaten. “The battle took place in the bedroom… they used something really heavy, probably a hammer or something but no weapon was found on the scene,” she noted.
Another relative speculated that Daniel may have pulled off the mask of one of the robbers during the scuffle, leading to them “battering him”.
Family members stated that it was the couple’s 13-year-old daughter who helped in reviving her mother and subsequently raised an alarm, alerting the neighbours. They both were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) and Praneila was treated and sent away while her husband was admitted.
Relatives indicated that Daniel suffered serious head injuries and has been attached to a life support machine since the incident. “He is still unconscious and the doctors said that his brain is partially damaged,” his sister-in-law said.
The pastor and father of two is not only a minibus operator but operates a small chicken business as well.
His relatives are under the impression that the attackers are known to Daniel since he had just conducted business with a few persons who had ordered chickens.
Meanwhile, outside the Intensive Care Unit at the GPH, many of the man’s relatives and members of the church gathered, anxiously awaiting the opportunity to visit him.
Many spoke of what a pleasant individual he was and how unfortunate the attack was.
Police sources told Stabroek News that no one has since been arrested in connection with the robbery under arms.
