The prosecution yesterday requested an adjournment until October into the matter for which Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Major Bruce Munroe, his wife Carol Ann Munroe and ex-soldier Leonard Wharton are accused of treason.
The request was, however, denied by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine–Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The chief magistrate expressed disappointment at the application made, stating that the matter is a high profile one and should not be granted so many adjournments. She further added that the prosecution should take into consideration that the offence is not bailable.
The chief magistrate after declining the application made by Sonia Joseph on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) said that the matter will be put down until September 15.
The trio is accused of treason: the charge states that between December 1, 2009 and December 16, 2010, at Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, they intended to level war within Guyana to force the President out of his office, in order to compel the Government of Guyana to change its measures.
