(Barbados Nation) Family members who are under mental and physical strain from looking after elderly and vulnerable individuals at home will soon receive help.
The assistance will soon come after the draft White Paper On Ageing becomes a national document. The paper includes a policy proposal for the provision of respite services to family members who are seriously affected by the extraordinary and often intensive demands of ongoing care.
This was revealed by Minister of Social Care Steve Blackett as he delivered the feature address at an Alzheimer’s Training Seminar, held at Savannah Hotel yesterday, marking World Alzheimer’s Day.
Blackett said respite care could be provided in the home, whereby volunteers or paid help might be brought in for a few hours or even overnight to give the caregiver a much needed break.
