`Pirate’ vans on radar in Barbados

(Barbados Nation) Police are planning to tackle “pirate” vans activity which legal operators say is worsening and killing their route taxi (ZR) business.

Traffic expert and Assistant Superintendent of Police Leon Blades said yesterday police had not been very successful in getting “pirates” before the courts in the past but would revisit the situation soon with the help of the Licensing Authority and the General Insurance Association of Barbados (GIAB).

Noting the police had received several names and numbers of people allegedly pirating routes, Blades said he had shared that information with GIAB and had been corresponding with the Licensing Authority.

“We have seen some taxis and ZMs operating even in the heart of Bridgetown and on various routes but we are planning to deal with it. That’s all I will say. We are looking to see how best we can tackle this,” he told the WEEKEND NATION following complaints from legal ZR owners on the Proute, St Thomas and Sugar Hill/Airy Hill, St Joseph routes.
