Election date within a week – Jagdeo

President Bharrat Jagdeo is expected to announce the date for the upcoming regional and general elections within the next week.

Speaking at a press conference at the Office of the President yesterday, the President stated that he had moments earlier received a letter from chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Dr Steve Surujbally advising him that the official list of electors was completed in accordance with the relevant laws of Guyana.

According to the letter, which the president read to the media, the list was certified by Chief Election Officer, Gocool Boodoo and it was ready for publication.

According to the head of state, “now that I have received the notification, I plan to within the week name the date of election”.

The president said that he is on record as saying that the elections will be held within the constitutionally due timeframe, “and so everything will be done in accordance with the constitution”.

General and regional elections are constitutionally due by the end of December this year and several political parties, including the ruling PPP/C have already hit the campaign trail.
