(Jamaica Observer) The organising committee of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) has abandoned the result of the controversial night race held August during the Barbados leg of the series.
In addition, the committee through a recently released statement, said that the decision to re-run the race has also been overturned.
“The results of the race will not be declared official, while the previous majority decision to re-run the race has been overturned,” the CMRC statement said.
The race meet held at the Bushy Park raceway in Barbados was conducted under challenging conditions caused by heavy showers and the final race of the day started in fading light.
Racing clubs of the three host countries jointly administer the CMRC: the Barbados Auto Racing League (BARL), the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) and the Jamaica Race Drivers’ Club (JRDC).
After further consultation between the CMRC representatives of the three countries and other championship stakeholders, also an analysis of the number of competitors likely to start the proposed re-run, the original plan has been modified. The joint statement, endorsed by all three countries, reads:
“After further lengthy discussions, there is now unanimous agreement between the three CMRC representatives to void the results of the Bushy Park race and to abandon the idea of a re-run. In our many exchanges, a sustainable future for the CMRC has emerged as the most important aim of all concerned; concessions have been made on all sides, which will hopefully create a fitting climax to this year’s championship and enable us to move forward, free from the shadow of politicking.
“Had the race three results from Bushy Park been made official, Barbados would have arrived in Guyana with a 51-point lead in the Country Championship over Jamaica, which originally wanted those results to stand; with the results voided, the advantage is cut to 38, a much-reduced target for Jamaica to chase.
“Guyana has lost the proposed extra race, which would have given added hype to their meeting, but it had become clear that not all the key players from the Bushy Park grid would be participating, which would have simply made a bad situation worse. Everyone is now applying their energies to ensuring that spectators in Guyana are treated to the festival of first-class motor sport they deserve.”
