East La Penitence man jailed over ganja

An East La Penitence man was yesterday sentenced to four years imprisonment for possession of marijuana, which he claimed was intended to make fast money for his sick girlfriend to undergo surgery.

Keith Bob, 57, pleaded guilty to possession of 1.992 kilogrammes of cannabis when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

In his address to the court, Bob stated that his girlfriend, a diabetic who was suffering from a fibroid condition, was very sick, and had to undergo surgery. He explained that he was trying to make fast money to have her admitted to a private hospital to undergo surgery for illness.

Afterward, the magistrate imposed the jail sentence and a $30,000 fine.
The court was told that on Thursday, October 13, police ranks conducted a search at A7 East La Penitence and uncovered a black handbag, which contained what appeared to be cannabis. Bob, who was at the residence, was told of the suspicion and he was arrested and taken into custody. The substance was later verified to be cannabis.
