Fire scare at Rockies

Patrons and employees of the popular Rockies Brazilian Bar on Light Street in the city suffered a scare yesterday afternoon after an fire ignited at the back of the building.

The fire, which was observed at the back of the building by patrons some time around 5 pm, was quickly put out by a bucket brigade and members of the Guyana Fire Service later arrived on the scene to contain the situation. When this newspaper arrived on the scene several firemen were around the building assessing the situation.

Thick smoke engulfed the three-storey building, which also houses a hotel, while police officers maintained law and order at the scene. According to a fireman, an electrical wire at the back of the building may have overheated but he noted that the incident was still being investigated.

The site is a popular hangout spot and various forms of business are conducted there. It is frequented by the local Brazilian population.
