Girl, 15, disappears; $50,000 ransom demanded

A 15-year-old girl has been reported missing and her guardians have since received a telephone call for a $50,000 ransom.

Rashana Alexander of Lot 421 School Street, Craig, East Bank Demerara, was last seen by her aunt and uncle on Saturday last, before she left for church. According to the girl’s uncle Michael Braithwaite, Rashana left home to attend service at a Seventh Day Adventist Church in Grove, East Bank Demerara. However, he and his wife later found out that there had been no church services but a conference in Georgetown instead. He said she was wearing a black skirt with a white top and had a blue and white purse.

Braithwaite said he has no idea whether Rashana attended the conference on that day, but some time on Sunday his son Yusuf Forrester received a call from an unknown male, who told him, “If you want back yuh sista yuh gotta pay $50,000”.

The man continued that the alleged kidnapper then instructed Forrester to get the money by Tuesday. He said on the same day, a report was made to the Grove Police station.

Rashana’s uncle also divulged that he had learnt that since she went missing, Rashana had contacted her boyfriend and told him that she was “at a friend house”. As a result, the boyfriend is currently in police custody.

After losing both her parents, the student of Providence Government School was taken in by her aunt and uncle, and according to Braithwaite she is scheduled to migrate next week to live with another uncle.

Braithwaite said Rashana was a good child, but “she never like school” and hasn’t attended classes since the beginning of the new school term. He said also that she did not want to travel to leave Guyana as she will be forced to go to school.

The 15-year-old’s guardians are pleading for her safe return. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Rashana Alexander can contact her relatives on telephone numbers 660-9260 and 665-4128 or the nearest police station.
