Truck driver held after hitting down cyclist

A 50-year-old man is now a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), after he was struck down by a truck on the Mahaicony Public Road.

According to Cheddi Seetaram of Broom Hall Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, at around 7.30 Sunday morning, he was seated on his parked bicycle facing east, chatting with a friend, at Prospect, Mahaicony, when he was struck from behind by a Canter truck. Seetaram said his friend, who was standing, managed to escape the vehicle by running after he saw it coming.

The Neighbourhood Democratic Council worker was first taken to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital, then referred to the GPH. He sustained a broken left leg and shoulder, dislocation to both sides of his hips, and a dislocated right middle finger.

Seetaram said the driver of the vehicle is currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while the truck is lodged in the Mahaica Police Station compound.
