Minibuses have increased their fares

Dear Editor,

Under the present government our transportation is in a disappointing state and there is little hope of it getting better. Every morning the roadways could be seen crowded with commuters that cause many of them to get transportation late and who end up being late for work, school, etc.

Every day commuters have to face all sorts of dilemmas and no serious action is being taken against the transportation operators, thus causing them to operate more and more lawlessly.

None of the parties aspiring to rule Guyana are saying anything to convince people that should they win there will be a better and more acceptable service.

The Route 32 minibuses have increased their fares to three hundred dollars from one hundred and forty dollars after four o’clock in the afternoon.

Due to those tremendous increases lots of commuters who finish work after 4pm, could be seen at Stabroek Market trying to catch a cheaper bus of which they have little hope, and next to where the buses which overcharge people are parked is a police outpost.

Before that, they were charging $200, which is still above the normal price, but people could have afforded that. Apart from that at present other route buses have started to put up signs saying that the fares will increase from $60 to $80, and some have already started to charge that.

To my knowledge, nothing has increased which would cause them to raise the fares. Meanwhile the commuters have to pay the increase although their salaries have not increased, and the politicians are hoping to get their votes without offering them any hope.

Yours faithfully,
Sahadeo Bates
