GEA workers put on $1M bail each over stolen fuel marker

The three Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) employees who allegedly stole over $3M in fuel markers were yesterday placed on bail after they appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine– Beharry to answer the charge of break and enter and larceny.

Charged are 29-year-old technician Sherwin Clarke; 30–year-old economist Delroy Oneil and 34-year-old inspector Joy Garraway.

All of the three accused who were represented by attorneys were placed on $1M bail each.

The allegation is that between October 28-29 at Quamina Street the trio broke and entered the GEA bond and stole a quantity of containers and fuel markers valued in excess of $3M.

In narrating the facts Prosecutor Lionel Harvey told the court that on the day in question a known vehicle was seen on Closed-Circuit Television camera (CCTV)  entering the compound and one of the accused was seen exiting the vehicle and entering the building. The  CCTV camera then went off and subsequently came on about two hours later.  The theft was discovered when employees arrived the following day to commence their work and they noticed that the padlock was tampered with and discovered the articles missing. The matter was reported and an investigation was launched.

Around 9 pm on October 28, the three employees were seen on camera footage entering the compound and the technician was seen headed straight to the building. The guard, who apparently was at another location in the compound when the employees got there, later arrived and closed the gate. Based on the recollection of the guard, there was no power failure at the facility and therefore the cameras had to have been disabled manually.

The trio will make another court appearance on November 21.
