Why can’t the President give pensioners at least a 12% increase?

Dear Editor,

President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo announced today in the media, twenty-five days before an impending general election, that the government would increase teachers, civil servants, and sugar workers’ salaries and wages, which could be consider laudable, deserved and most timely.
One suspects that there may or may not be ulterior motives in this gesture.

May I respectfully be permitted to remind the President, if he peruses the Stabroek News, that there are over twelve thousand citizens in Guyana who are NIS and state pensioners and are surviving in this ‘hard guava‘ season on minuscule pensions. Could he give benign consideration to these hapless, helpless and marginalized voters of this country for an increase of at least12% on their current pensions?

And further, while he is at it, could he please give his respected assurance to NIS pensioners that their pension funds scheme is secure?

Yours faithfully,
