Who is the political flip-flopper?

Dear Editor,

George Santayana said that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.  Thus reading one of Joey Jagan’s letters in the Stabroek News of February 8, 2007 captioned ‘Reform is needed in many areas,‘ was quite revealing.  Dr Joey Jagan was quoted as saying in that letter that the actions by the Jagdeo government endorse “his contention that the people are in the clutches of a communist regime.”  In the same letter he said that “the PPP in parliament engaged in communist manipulation on the casino laws and the budget as they shoved these laws down the people’s throat.”  Again, he said, “Tax reform was essential to a successful VAT but after fifteen years, the communists in Freedom House led by the Gang of 8, are no reformers as we all can see if we look at any other aspect of life in Guyana. Where is the reform in education? Where is the reform in health? Where is the reform in labour relations  or in the constitution or the legal system? The answer is that reform is not on Freedom House’s agenda since President Cheddi died.”

Is this the same Dr Joey Jagan who is accusing one of Guyana’s most competent patriots, Moses Nagamootoo, of drinking soup?  From the evidence above, who is the political flip flopper?

Dr Joey Jagan has no moral authority to challenge Moses Nagamootoo; he is not in Moses’ weight class.  He is a flyweight compared to a political heavyweight like Moses. Dr Joey Jagan has successfully established himself, just like Peter Ramsaroop as being a tried and tested political grasshopper. Moses has an established track record of consistent politics by staying in the PPP for more than 50 years through thick and thin, and never leaving the PPP, even when the opportunity was always there to join Burnham in the ’70s for much gravy. The truth is the Jagdeo/Ramotar group that hijacked Freedom House has left Moses as he consistently struggled for the betterment for the working class.

On the other hand, in those 50 years Dr Joey Jagan was with more than one party.

I close with a quote from Ayn Rand – the soul has a single basic function – our values barometer.  We know the temperature of Dr Joey Jagan’s values.

Yours faithfully,
Sasenarine Singh
