Man who accidentally shot cousin on manslaughter charge

Seelall Parbhu, who allegedly shot his cousin Permaul Rampersaud dead on Sunday, was remanded to prison on Wednesday after being charged with manslaughter.

Stabroek News was told that Parbhu, of Block Eight, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, was arraigned before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court. He was remanded until December 8. The Director of Public Prosecutions recommended the manslaughter charge.

Reports are that the two were among four persons travelling in a car along the Lusignan Public Road when two rounds were discharged, striking Rampersaud, who was sitting in the front passenger side seat, in the back and right arm. Investigations revealed that Parbhu, a licensed firearm holder, was clearing his gun when it went off. Parbhu, who is the manager of a popular Georgetown business, was sitting behind Rampersaud at the time. He was said to have been drunk.

The injured Persaud was rushed to the Georgetown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. They men were returning home from a wedding house.
