Construction of Mahaica market on schedule -Whittaker

Minister of Local Govern-ment and Regional Develop-ment, Norman Whittaker is pleased at the pace at which work on the $82.9M Mahaica Market is progressing and is confident that it will be finished on schedule.

According to a Govern-ment Information Agency (GINA) press release, in September government set aside the said sum to build the facility.

During a visit on Monday to the site, Whittaker said he was confident that the project will be completed within the set nine-month timeframe.

GINA said the foundation for the market is complete and the curb walls are currently being built.
The two-storey building will house 65 stalls and provide a safe location for vendors who usually ply their trade along the Mahaica market roadway.

The Unity/Vereeniging Neighbourhood Democratic Council has been assisting the ministry with monitoring the construction, which is being undertaken by C. Dookie and Sons Contracting Services.

During the visit, Whittaker also checked on the construction of the Haslingston/Grove tarmac that is being built at a cost of $20M. This project is expected to be completed within three months. Both projects are Government of Guyana/ Caribbean Development Bank ventures being implemented under the ministry, GINA said.
