Don’t teachers need netbooks too?

Dear Editor,
I must commend the Government of Guyana for its initiative in making the OLPF project possible. Indeed, if we are to progress in the areas of education and information and communication technology, we need to be equipped with the right tool(s). The netbook computer which is being provided by the government through the OLPF is a very useful machine. However, my question to those in authority and to those persons who are part of the OLPF secretariat, is a simple one: Don’t teachers need netbooks too? Aren’t teachers eligible to receive netbooks? Teachers are the key stakeholders in education. They are directly responsible for moulding the children under their charge. Yet, I haven’t heard anything about teachers benefiting  from this project of the government. What I did see thus far, is that in some instances, these netbooks have been given to the wrong set of people; people who did not fit the criteria set out by the Government of Guyana. What I haven’t seen so far is any teacher receiving same. I wonder why our teachers are left out considering their meagre salaries and their low standard of living? Many teachers live from paycheck to paycheck. Teachers play an important role in the lives of their children and I would be very happy if the Government of Guyana can do whatever it needs to do to ensure that each teacher in this country receives a netbook computer too.

I am sure that our teachers would be very happy if this happens. I am looking forward to the day when this becomes a reality.

Yours faithfully,
Jagatram Tekchand
