A 25-year-old man of Amelia’s Ward was arrested by police after he was found with 520 grammes of leaves and stems believed to be cannabis.
According to an informed source, police officers were in the Three Friend Mines/Old England area to drop off supplies for ranks working at polling stations there.
When the man saw the police vehicle approaching, he started running. The ranks became suspicious and gave chase and the man jumped into the Demerara River in his bid to escape. Police went after him and he was arrested.
A search was conducted and the illegal substance was found concealed in a black bag he was carrying.
He is currently in custody at the Mackenzie Police station.
