Duo remanded over forged bank cheques

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday remanded two men to prison after they appeared before her to answer to two counts of forgery.

The allegation is that on October 23 at Georgetown with intent to defraud, Stephan Reece and Sylvester Nannam forged one Scotia Bank cheque to obtain $3M. It is further alleged that between August 1 and October 23 the duo conspired with other persons to forge another Scotia Bank cheque and obtained $3M from Ceymona Hakh.

The men were not required to plead to the indictable charges after they were read at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The court was told by the prosecution that the duo is known to each other. Number one accused, Reece, is an accountant at a rice mill that  is owned by the VC and his wife. Between August 1 and October 3, financial records and documents along with the cheques were handed over to him. However, an investigation was later carried out because the name of the number two accused was signed on the cheques and the investigation proved that the cheques were cashed by him.

The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that  the duo had admitted to the offence when they were arrested and stressed that there are more charges likely to be instituted against them.

The matter was transferred to Court Two yesterday for report and fixture.
