Teacher Myrna King looks back with pride

Teacher Myrna King can be described as one of the more successful ladies who were able to balance her commitment to her profession with that to her family, fondly recalling her days moulding young minds.

The now 70-plus-year-old-woman who was first married to Cedric Frank and is a mother of seven children, entered the teaching profession in 1964 and retired in 1995, and again answered the call to teach in the same year, practising until 2002.

She still remembers her first calling at the St Clement School in Susannah’s Rust in 1964. At first, she taught at the primary level and told this newspaper that she still feels a special sense of achievement when she is approached by any of her ex-students who say, ‘You were my teacher at x or y school.’ Teacher Myrna served in this community for six years, until 1970.

She then requested to teach nursery school children and today holds the distinction of being one of the first batch of trainees who graduated from the Teachers’ Training College. On completion of her training, King took up several appointments as a Nursery School Teacher but it is her stint at the Windsor Forest Nursery in 1976, which has lasting memories.

On leaving St Anthony’s at Windsor Forest, Teacher Myrna took up a post at the Leonora Nursery School and delights in the memories of those days. She recalls Class One, First Class Teacher Shanti and Minister of Housing and Water Irfaan Ali as two of her outstanding students, during those days.

Teacher Myrna counted success not only in the class room but at home where she was a loving wife and mother. To date, five of her seven children have also taught in schools and already, one grandchild has gone through college and is today a Class One Teacher.
