City businesses in yo-yo mode

After some semblance of normalcy returned to Georgetown during the morning hours, businesses did another swift shutdown yesterday afternoon when the elections results were announced.

It was the rumours of an impending protest on Wednesday that saw most businesses close their doors very early.

Yesterday morning, however, when Stabroek News visited the streets of the city, there were indications that some people had overcome their fears and were out and about conducting their daily business.

The Singer Store did not open its doors for business yesterday.

At around 11 am, Bourda Market was bustling as usual, whereas at Stabroek Market and the Stelling View Mall most of the stalls were closed. Those that were opened, however, were conducting their business like on a normal day.

Soon after the elections results were announced, Stabroek News revisited the streets of the city around 4.30 pm. Persons still on the street were all hustling to get home as soon as possible.

The East Coast bus park was almost deserted with only one bus collecting the few passengers who were still there.

Further checks revealed that the West Bank and West Coast Demerara bus parks were almost deserted whereas on a normal day they would be throngs of passengers going home after a day of work.

Stores along Regent Street closed their doors and the bustle at Bourda Market came to an abrupt end.
