What is CIOG’s position on the Syria situation?

Dear Editor,

In a recent statement released at the end of emergency talks on Syria, the head of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu called upon the regime of President Bashar al-Assad to “respond to the decisions of the Arab League, to stop the use of unnecessary force” on its own citizens.

Many in Guyana are wondering too, what is the local Central Islamic Organization of Guyana (CIOG) and the Guyana Government stance on this vexed matter? Several thousand Syrians have already been brutally killed and more are likely to meet a similar fate from a brutal corrupt dictator, who does not want to give up power.

Is it worth sitting on our hands turning our faces the other way, and pretending we do not see or hear the cries and anguish of our innocent defenceless and hapless brothers and sisters?

Yours faithfully,
