Berbice lawyers slam delays at Land Registry

Legal practitioners in Berbice, concerned at inordinate delays, in the passing of land titles at the Land Registry, are calling for an enquiry into its operations.

The lawyers are peeved over the excessive backlog of hundreds of matters, dating back as far as five years ago.

Prior to calling for an enquiry, the Berbice Bar Association had met Juliet Sattaur, Registrar of Lands, in a bid to have these concerns addressed. However, according to a member of the Berbice Bar, nothing has been done.

The lawyers said the excessive delays result in applicants being unable to access loans from commercial lending institutions, or even proceed with the sale of their respective properties.

In addition, this newspaper was informed that files are reportedly misplaced, and irreplaceable documents go missing, when left at the courthouse.
